MARVÃO OPEN CHAMBER is an international chamber music project that brings together leading names in musical performance and emerging young talents in an experience of artistic creation, learning and exchange in Marvão.
Promoted by Marvão International Academy for Music, Arts and Sciences, the project is based on the artistic residency model regularly developed by the Academy, creating a close and intensive working environment between musicians of different generations and backgrounds. The outcome of this process is presented to the public in a concert that brings the excellence of chamber music to the local community and territory.
In its 2027 edition, MARVÃO OPEN CHAMBER will bring together renowned musicians Christoph Poppen, violin, and Pascal Moragues, clarinet, with three young musicians selected from the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid.
From 26 to 29 April, the quintet will be in residence in Marvão, working intensively on interpretation, listening and ensemble cohesion. The residency will culminate in a public concert on 28 April, giving audiences the opportunity to experience the outcome of this artistic encounter between masters and young performers.
The programme is dedicated to two fundamental works of the repertoire for clarinet and strings:
Two works of extraordinary technical demands and musical depth, placing dialogue between the instruments, mutual listening and the development of a true ensemble identity at the forefront.
The choice of this repertoire allows the pedagogical and artistic dimensions of the project to be fully explored, providing the young musicians with an experience of working directly with internationally renowned performers.
Christoph Poppen — Violin and Artistic Director
A violinist, conductor and educator with a distinguished international career, Christoph Poppen is Music Director of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Artistic Director of the International Music Festival of Marvão and Principal Conductor of the Cologne Chamber Orchestra. He regularly appears as a guest conductor with leading international orchestras and maintains an extensive pedagogical and chamber music career.
Pascal Moragues — Clarinet
Pascal Moragues is one of the leading international figures in the world of clarinet. Principal Clarinet of the Orchestre de Paris since 1981, he is a professor at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris and the Royal College of Music in London. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with many of today’s most important conductors and musicians and has performed in major concert halls around the world.
Young Musicians from the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía
The three young performers are selected from among the students of the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía, one of Europe’s most highly regarded institutions for musical education and training. Their participation ensures both a high level of excellence and a dimension of artistic renewal and continuity.
More than a concert, MARVÃO OPEN CHAMBER offers an experience of encounter between generations and different musical backgrounds. The work developed during the residency allows knowledge to be passed on directly through practice, listening and shared experience.
By bringing internationally renowned musicians and young performers in training to Marvão, the project reinforces the Academy’s commitment to building bridges between artistic excellence, education and territory, helping to bring chamber music closer to new audiences and to establish Marvão as a place of artistic creation and international encounter.
